Calpurnia

Calpurnia is a black slave. She does the cooking and cleaning for the Finches. Atticus gives her respect and some authority over Jem and Scout even though she is black. The Finches treat Calpurnia like she is part of the family. She can be kind of grouchy sometimes and can be very stern with Scout when she is rude. She likes pleasing Jem and Scout but knows when to punish them.

  1. Eli, Calpurnia is not a slave. She is paid by the Finches. Being their housekeeper is her job.

Once again I am looking for you to tell me more or use examples in your writing. Atticus gives her respect and authority - How, When, Why? How do you know she is treated like part of the family? Why does she like pleasing Jem and Scout?

I'm glad you contrasted this with disciplining them. What does it mean? Why does she act like this if being their housekeeper is only her job. The answer to this is the answer to the question Why does Atticus trust and respect Calpurnia enough to giver her authority to help raise his children.
